Top Qualities of an Esthetician

Congratulations, you’re a certified esthetician! It’s now time to go out and use those skills you’ve learned. Simple as that, right? Well, don’t forget the importance of repeat clients and refferals. What are the top qualities that clients are looking for in an esthetician to keep them coming back? Read on to find out.

First and foremost, you must be knowledgable. Considering you went through a lot of training to get here, you are most likely excited about the world of skincare and ready to perform. However, there is always more to learn about the skin care industry. Consider participating in educational workshops and advanced courses to ensure you are keeping up with the latest trends, techniques and products. Attend trade shows and read up on current spa or skin care magazines and web sites. Also, be sure you know your products really well. Research any new ingredients so that you don’t inadvertently use an irritating product on a sensitive skin type. In this industry, there’s always more to know and learn, so keep up educating yourself.

Good communication skills are a must. It’s important to start a dialogue with your client before jumping into the treatment. Be sure to ask your client about their skin type, skin care regime and the products that they currently use. Make note of any concerns or issues that the client may have and perform a thorough skin analysis. The communication should then continue as you describe each step of the treatment.

Care and consideration for your clients. A good esthetician doesn’t just go through the motions. They are passionate about their job. They give their undivided attention, listen to their clients needs and show overall compassion. Customize your treatments based on the client’s skin care needs and consider adding in a special touch to your service. At the end of the treatment, offer samples of the products you used or recommended during the treatment.

These ideas are quite simple, aren’t they? However, these qualities also separate the good estheticians from the great estheticians. Now go out there and be great! A successful career awaits!

Job Trend: The Rise in Esthetics Jobs

Are you considering a career in esthetics? Not sure whether to take the plunge? There isn’t a better time than right now to get started. Recent data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that there will be an increase in jobs for licensed estheticians. The data predicts an increase of as much as 25 percent more jobs from 2010 to 2020! That is an incredible growth rate for just one industry. Right now there is a high demand for skin care specialists all over the country, which is great news for individuals working toward their esthetics license.

OK, so exactly what type of jobs are out there? Once you are licensed, there is a wide variety of career choices to consider. From a traditional esthetician working at a spa or luxury cruise line to a makeup artist working with bridal parties or even celebrities! Several of our very own Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics graduates have gone on to own successful spa businesses. Perhaps you’re more interested in the business side of skin care, such as an assistant buyer, inspector or salesperson. There are also instructor jobs and beauty editor jobs to consider. The possibilities beyond an education in esthetics are almost endless!

The best part of choosing an esthetics career is how quickly and easily you can train, obtain your license and then move on to working. At Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics, the basic esthetics program is only 300 hours of training. That’s just ten weeks if you attend full-time. There are part-time day and evening options available too, which are great for those looking for a career switch or also high school students that aren’t interested in a four year degree.

Back to School – Beginning Your Journey in Esthetics

Changing leaves, cooler weather, apples, pumpkins, books and pencils! Fall is typically equated with “back-to-school” and things are no different here at the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics. This past September, we welcomed 60 new students as they began their esthetic training. These incoming students were both nervous and excited as they started their journey here. Current students smile when a new group enters, as they remember their own first day. Before long, nerves are replaced with confidence, as they excel in their new skills.

There is an overall sense of camaraderie and many friendships are formed. We make learning fun here. For example, each year the students are invited to participate in our Halloween costume party. This is not just a party, it is also a great opportunity to showcase students’ new makeup skills and overall creativity. Prizes are awarded for various categories, including best make-up and best group. The Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics staff loves a good party too and have been captured on film in some impressive costumes.

So where does a student start? We offer three simple and convenient schedule options to fit your lifestyle:

  • Full-Time Day. Students who are able to commit to a full-time schedule will finish 300 hours of study in ten short weeks. They will complete the whole 1200 hour Master Esthetic program in just ten months.
  • Part-Time Day. Each September, the Institute offers this part-time option. It has been an attractive option for mothers of young children, as they have found this to be the perfect way to balance their family life with their educational goals. Students who choose this option will complete their 600 hours in just under a year.
  • Part-Time Evening. For those with the obligation of a full-time job, the part-time evening schedule is a great option. As with the part-time day options, students will complete their 600 hours in just under a year.

To find out if an esthetic career could be for you, the Admissions Department invites you to take a tour. During your tour, you will have the opportunity to see our students perform various treatments in our Student Public Clinic and also hear our knowledgable and dedicated instructors.
